“...no man may initiate the use of physical force against others. No man—or group or society or government—has the right to assume the role of a criminal and initiate the use of physical compulsion against any man. Men have the right to use physical force only in retaliation and only against those who initiate its use. The ethical principle involved is simple and clear-cut: it is the difference between murder and self-defense. A holdup man seeks to gain a value, wealth, by killing his victim; the victim does not grow richer by killing a holdup man. The principle is: no man may obtain any values from others by resorting to physical force.” Ayn Rand |

You Can’t Defend Your Rights Why do people risk their lives crossing the ocean in rafts and small boats to escape to the United States – and why don't people risk their lives trying to get into Cuba? Why were people willing to dig tunnels or scale the Berlin Wall, risking death by a sentry's bullet to escape from East Berlin-and not rush to move into East Berlin? Why do women, and sometimes men, risk their lives to escape domestic abuse? What is it that the United States, West Berlin, and being out of the reach of an abusive partner offer to any person? Freedom.
Why do we need freedom? (back to top) What threatens freedom in a country or in an abusive relationship? (back to top) When you don't own/direct your own life in a society, to the extent that a society offers no LEGAL protection for you as an individual, you are living, not by right but by permission, which means, to that extent, as a slave. You are property partially owned and controlled by the state bureaucrats, the authorities. They claim the fraudulent "right" to "redistribute" the fruits of your creative ambition and effort, your property. What is admirably unique about the United States that so many risk their lives coming here? (back to top) Does the protection of individual rights guarantee success? (back to top) What happens if someone doesn't want to do the thinking that leads a better life? (back to top) How would you ever figure out who gets what in a statist, "entitlement" society? (back to top) Are there such things as group "rights"? (back to top) How do you rescue a society headed toward tyranny? (back to top) What are individual rights? (back to top) Individual rights are inalienable, not subject to a majority vote. The majority has no "right" to vote away the rights of the minority. Individual rights are moral principles guiding and protecting your freedom of thinking, judging, and acting on that judgment to pursue your own personal happiness at no one’s expense. And they apply equally to all within that society. The concept of individual rights is a positive moral concept, saying to anyone living in a society in which individual rights are protected by law, that you have a right to your own life, the freedom to think and to pursue your dreams. Individual rights preserve everyone's rights. They tell the government: "This is my sphere of freedom into which you cannot meddle; you are there to protect my individual rights, not to violate them." With individual rights, how do you deal with your neighbors? (back to top) Why might one not achieve happiness in a free society? (back to top) So . . . What can you do to preserve individual rights? (back to top) Obama's "hope and change" is his hope for power and control over your life. He is pulverizing individual rights right before your eyes. The only proper function of a government is to protect individual rights. Don't let your freedom, and the freedom of your loved ones slip away. Don't give bureaucrats the "right" to enslave you into involuntary servitude by creating bogus "rights" that strip away individual rights. Don't let them directly or indirectly confiscate your earnings and destroy your prosperity in the name of the collective, the public good. Fight for your happiness and the happiness of your children. It is the best gift you can give yourself and them. Defend the only system based on the recognition of your right to your own life – defend individual rights and Capitalism. This upcoming election is crucial to preserve freedom. Spread the word; support individual-rights-protecting candidates. And bring your neighbors and friends to the polling booth to rescue our country. |
